Can Vitamin C help to prevent age-related Osteoporosis?
The Healing powers of Vitamin C and its ability to prevent age-related Osteoporosis

Widely recognised for supporting the immune system and maintaining strong bones, Vitamin C also helps with iron absorption and good cardiovascular health.

It’s thorough immune-system supporting capacities have led Vitamin C to become pivotal in the fight against various illnesses, whilst acting as a fantastic natural antioxidant that protects the body from free radical damage.

It has also been used as a therapeutic agent in many diseases and disorders, helping to reduce the severity of allergic reactions in order to be able to fight off infections.

Where does it come from?

Vitamin C can be found in foods including Kiwi, mango, papaya and pineapple.

Here at Nourished, we source our Vitamin C from one of the highest concentrations of Vitamin C in the world: the berries of a Camu Camu tree, a bushy riverside tree which his found in the Amazon rainforests of Peru and Brazil.

The Camu Camu berry is rarely eaten fresh, due to its strong sour taste. However, at Nourished we have encapsulated it into a delicious vegan gel that taste’s of wild strawberry. You can learn more about our Vitamin C here.

Containing up to 3 grams of Vitamin C per 3/5 ounces, at Nourished we have concentrated the powder of Camu Camu berry so it contains more Vitamin C per gram, compared to the fresh berries it is actually sourced in.

The healing power of Vitamin C

Possibly one of the most famous vitamins for its ability to form and maintain bones, skin, and blood vessels, Vitamin C continues to surprise scientists with its impressive benefits and properties.

It’s because of these incredible healing powers and our concentrated serving, that Vitamin C remains to be a very popular selection amongst people who take our nutrition quiz. You can take our quiz to discover which Nourishment's our in-house nutritionist recommends you include, in your own personalised blend.

We deep-dived into the scientific research behind this incredible ingredient, giving you the lowdown on its impressive healing powers. Essential for your skin, bones, and connective tissue, it promotes healing and helps the body absorb iron, but most intriguingly - Vitamin C has been recognised as having the ability to help in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis because of its capacity to increase bone density.

Impressive research demonstrating Vitamin C’s ability to help with the prevention and treatment of age-related Osteoporosis

In 2010, a  test was conducted to test the effects of Vitamin C on oxidative stress and bone mineral density (BMD) in elderly people.

Oxidative stress is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, which can lead to cell and tissue damage, leading to Osteoporosis - a health condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. Developing slowly over several years, it is often only diagnosed when a fall or sudden impact causes a bone to break or fracture. The most common injuries in people with osteoporosis are a broken wrist or hip.

How was the test conducted?

Over the duration of 1 year, a double-blind, controlled clinical test was carried out on 90 elderly subjects. They were then divided into three age-paired random groups with 30 subjects in each, whilst subject to varying placebos and alternating measurements of Vitamin C, from 500mg to 1000mg.

Conclusion

After 12 months of testing numerous subjects, it was discovered that absorbic acid is useful to preventing bone loss linked to oxidative stress in elderly people.

The results showed a significant decrease in hip-bone loss in a group receiving 1,000mg of Vitamin C, discovering a positive correlation between hip and bone mineral density. Not only that, a significantly lower decrease of LPO (p < 0.05) was observed as linked with hip bone loss in the group that received 1,000mg, in comparison to those tested with a serving of 500mg.

In conclusion, the impressive results suggest that the administration of Vitamin C could be useful in preventing or aiding in the treatment of age-related osteoporosis.

Are you getting enough Vitamin C?

If you're looking to increase your levels of Vitamin C there are a range of methods in which you could supplement, several of which being sourced directly from the foods you consume.

Found in fruits and vegetables such as kale, broccoli, oranges, strawberries, and sweet potato to name a few, by eating a varied balanced diet, you can get most of this nutrient that you need.

However, in order for the levels of Vitamin C to make a valuable difference in your body, you need to make sure you are getting enough high impact nutrition, which you may struggle to find in your every-day diet.

At Nourished, our stacks are a vibrant new means of gaining 7 high-quality supplemental nutrients and minerals taken from only the best natural sources. All of our ingredients at Nourished are consumed in a gummy stack, meaning they have a much higher absorption rate than standard isolated tablets, using vegan and sugar-free wholefood ingredients.

By utilising the best sources, we can ensure our gummies come in their purest form, allowing you to avoid cheap or unreliably arranged vitamin balances found in lower quality products.

Vitamin C is one of the components of our Inner Defence stack, our blend that’s designed to support your immune system, keeping you as strong and healthy as possible. Alternatively, you can build Vitamin C into your own personalised stack in the lab.
