Mango powder: can it support weight loss?

Take our 1 minute quiz Take Quiz
Mango powder, also known as amchur powder, is becoming increasingly popular due to its benefits of supporting weight loss by suppressing appetite, preventing fat build up and speeding up the metabolism.

But what evidence is there to support it’s weight loss capabilities? We’ve analysed one of the main studies supporting this claim, to give you the low down on this slimming super-food!

The Research

The study ‘The effect of Irvingia gabonensis seeds on body weight and blood lipids of obese subjects in Cameroon’ examined the impact supplements containing irvingia gabonensis, an African mango, had on 40 obese subjects. None of the participants were taking any weight reducing medication, and none of them were following any specific diet.

The subjects were given two different types of capsules over a four-week period, which either contained mango powder or a placebo. The subjects were examined weekly during the experimental period to record their body weight, body fat, waist, and hip circumferences, increase or decrease in appetite and any side effects they were experiencing. Blood samples were also taken at the beginning of the study, two weeks in and at the end of treatment.

The Results

Decrease in weight – Supplementing mango powder induced a decrease in weight of 1.48% after two weeks and of 2.7% after one month.

Waist circumference and hip circumference – Both were reduced significantly in the subjects taking mango powder, compared to those taking the placebo.

Blood pressure – Systolic blood pressure was significantly reduced by the active supplementation, compared to the placebo;

Effect on cholesterol – Subjects who had been taking mango powder experienced cholesterol concentration reduced by 39.21%, triglyerides reduced by 44.9% and LDL reduced by 45.58%, whilst no significant change was found in the placebo group.

The study reported that the soluble fibre of the seed in the mango are ‘bulk-forming’ laxatives, which can delay stomach emptying and lead to a more gradual absorption of dietary sugar, which can help lower the hypoglycemic index; a huge benefit for diabetics.

The study also clearly demonstrated that supplementing mango powder can contribute to weight reduction and cholesterol reduction over a 4-week period in obese subjects.

It is important to note that simply supplementing mango powder is not recommended as an effective method for weight loss. A healthy, well balanced diet and regular exercise are essential for losing weight, which can be supported by the aid of mango powder.

What are the other benefits?

Mango Powder is so much more than just a weight loss aid and other research has shown it's additional benefits;

  • Helps to speed up the metabolism and increase energy levels with its rich antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • High in iron which can be beneficial for pregnant women or those suffering from anemia.

  • Contains anti-ageing properties to keep hair and skin looking healthy and youthful.

  • Contains strong anti-oxidants which can ensure good bowel movement, improve digestion and fight acidity.

  • Activates the enzyme eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide) synthase for optimal nitric oxide function, which helps to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure.
