Hangovers - Party Proofed

As you get older, have you noticed that your body seems to deal with alcohol differently compared to when you were younger? Well, as we age, the liver can take longer to metabolise alcohol, meaning that the feelings of a hangover can be more intense or prolonged than what you may have experienced when you were younger, (and which usually results in more greasy food and paracetamol after a night out).

As we age, the body’s total water content reduces too, resulting in the alcohol becoming less diluted and making the feelings of a hangover feel worse.

We are all aware of how important a good night’s rest is to support the healthy function of our body, but our sleep is another factor that is affected as we age.

The Sleep Foundation details how our internal body clock can be disrupted as we age, leading to impacts on our circadian rhythm [iv]. As we age, our body also produces less melatonin, a hormone which makes us feel more tired [iv].

Negative impacts on our sleep can have some troubling effects on our health if not dealt with. NHS England details that a lack of sleep can cause the following issues [v]:

  • You are more at risk of diabetes and heart disease when not getting enough sleep.
  • A lack of sleep can negatively affect your immune system.
  • It can make you more irritable and negatively affect your mood.
  • It can put you more at risk of clinical depression and anxiety disorders.
  • A loss of libido can be experienced with a lack of sleep.
  • Lack of sleep can cause infertility due to how it affects reproductive hormones.
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness results in low energy levels.

There are some natural ingredients that can aid a peaceful night's sleep, such as 5-HTP, Tart Cherry and Ashwagandha.

  • 5-HTP: This ingredient can increase REM sleep by 48% through its serotonin production [ix] [x], and studies have shown that this ingredient aids in improving sleep quality whilst also helping with mood regulation, stress and reducing anxiety. It even has the ability to act as an appetite suppressant! [viii].

Energy - Energy/High Flyer

As we have previously mentioned, as we age, changes to our hormones can result in a variety of negative factors, including decreasing our energy levels.

As our bodies age, our cells can also lose some of their strength, resulting in certain tasks becoming more tiring than they may have been when we were younger.
